What Is a Herniated or
Bulging Disc?

A herniated disc occurs when one of the soft, cushion-like discs between the vertebrae of your spine becomes damaged. Each spinal disc has a soft, gel-like center (nucleus) surrounded by a tough, rubbery outer layer (annulus).

When excessive pressure is placed on the disc, it can bulge or rupture, pushing the inner material through a tear in the outer layer. This condition, often referred to as a slipped disc or ruptured disc, can irritate nearby nerves and cause pain or other symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of
a Herniated Disc?

The symptoms depend on the location of the herniated disc and whether it is compressing a nerve. In most cases, symptoms occur on one side of the body and may include:

Sharp, Electric,
or Burning Pain
Tingling or Numbness
Muscle Weakness
Pain Radiating
to the Arms or Legs

What Causes These Symptoms?

Herniated discs typically result from gradual wear and tear, also known as disc degeneration.
As we age, spinal discs become less flexible, making them more prone to tearing or rupturing from even minor strains or twists.
When a disc herniates and its inner material pushes outward, it can compress nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness.

Risk Factors for a Herniated Disc

Several factors can increase your risk of developing a herniated disc

Lumbar/Cervical Disc

Lumbar or cervical disc damage increases the risk of a herniated disc.

Excess Weight

Puts additional stress on the discs, particularly in the lower back.

Genetics

Some individuals inherit a predisposition to disc degeneration and herniation.

Occupation

Jobs that involve repetitive lifting, pulling, pushing, bending, or twisting can increase the likelihood of a herniated disc. Those with physically demanding jobs are at higher risk of developing back issues.
